We aim to build structures that (1) can be fabricated from sheet materials, (2) can be compactly packed in a pre-fabricated state, (3) be assembled or deployed quickly (4) to serve as spatial structures.
The participants will develop the concepts through digital modeling and physical prototyping and build the table-top size models using digital fabrication tools.

Workshop description

In this workshop, participants will work in groups to build prototypical structures based on cutting and folding sheet materials. We try to come up with structures that (1) can be fabricated from sheet materials, (2) can be compactly packed in a pre-fabricated state, (3) be assembled or deployed quickly (4) to serve as spatial structures. The participants will develop the concepts through digital modeling and physical prototyping and build the table-top size models using digital fabrication tools. Constructed structures will be presented and evaluated for novelty of ideas and structural performance. Specific conditions and target structure will be specified later before the AAG registration period.
The instructors provide necessary knowledge (rigid origami, curved folding, sandwich structures) and digital tools (crane, lotus, freeform origami) to solve the design problem based on origami concepts.

We are also making this workshop a place for students, researchers and practitioners to interact with each other. Therefore, we ask all participants to give lightning talks at the beginning. We also encourage participants to develop further collaborations on the ideas discussed in the workshop, ideally presented at AAG 2025.
